Paul MacDonald had been doing waste management as a sole proprietorship when he made a key decision that would change the future of his company.

He decided to incorporate as a social enterprise, Ethical Waste Services, with a mission to donate 50% of the company’s profits to charities that support youth at risk in his community.

That was 2012, and since then his fleet has grown to five trucks. Located in Coquitlam, BC, they specialize in drywall removal, construction debris removal, demolitions, and asbestos abatement.

In the past several years, they’ve donated tens of thousands of dollars each year to charities like ACCESS Youth Outreach Services, Habitat for Humanity, and the Douglas College Foundation.

A Sense of Community

Though the soul of the company started with MacDonald, he says it’s the company’s employees and customers that are the heroes of the business. “We decided we needed to do more than run a business,” says MacDonald. “Our employees are saving the lives of young people every day. We’re grateful to our contractors and customers who are helping us donate funds each year to support a worthy cause — the youth of our community. This is a group effort.”

It’s an approach that has helped them grow their customer list quickly. “They like our friendly staff, quality of work, prompt response time and overall ethical and honest approach to running a business,” says MacDonald.

Profits (and Donations) Triple in Just Three Years

In five years, Ethical Waste Services grew from a single truck to five and added their demolition and asbestos abatement divisions. As the business scaled in size, so too has its donations. Still, that growth came with its share of challenges. Since using Vonigo’s junk removal software, however, their profits (and in turn their donations) have tripled in the last three years.

Waste Management Software Keeps Them Organized

“As the number of our jobs increased, it became more difficult to track the daily schedules for each truck and crew,” says MacDonald. “Vonigo allows us to make the daily schedules visible to all crews in real time. When jobs get delayed or need to be moved around, we are able to adjust without any major disruptions to the business.”

“The tools with the daily schedule allow our crews to get to jobs on time,” says MacDonald. “Thanks to Google Maps, we have the contact information and descriptions of the jobs at hand, and we can track expenses, all in one work order.”

Right through to payment, they’ve automated their processes. “Our invoicing department has all the information on hand once the job is completed,” says MacDonald. “The whole process from the booking of the job to invoicing is smooth, which is important to us and to our customers.”
