The winners of the 2013 BCIC-New Ventures Competition have been announced, and Vonigo has taken top honours from among a list of 146 applicants.

“This year’s finalists were the strongest and most promising set of companies we’ve seen over the 13-year history of the competition,” said Angie Schick, Program Manager, BCIC-New Ventures Competition. “Congratulations to all our winning companies. The BCIC-New Ventures Competition looks forward to following their continued development and success.”

“For more than a decade, the BCIC-New Ventures Competition has helped to encourage new technology leaders and entrepreneurs,” said Technology, Innovation and Citizens’ Services Minister Andrew Wilkinson. “We are proud to support programs like this that encourage innovation and help develop the talent that is so important for new companies to grow and thrive. Our tech sector is a vital part of the economy, and as it expands it creates new jobs and prosperity for BC families.”

As winners, Vonigo will receive the $107,000 BCIC first prize package. Additional prizes were awarded to a biotech company that works with monoclonal antibody therapeutics and a cloud-based communications platform for medical practices and hospitals.

“We are thrilled,” said Vonigo CEO John Carter. “It was beneficial for us just to have participated in the competition, regardless of the outcome. It was great and to have been fortunate enough to win. It was not only a surprise, but an honour.”

The BCIC New Ventures competition takes place over four successive, and increasingly complex rounds of elimination. By Round 4, only ten companies remain in the running for over $300,000 in cash and prizes. The BCIC New Ventures Competition supports British Columbia’s technology industry and is one of North America’s largest technology business idea competitions. “Thanks to everyone at the New Ventures BC Competition, the volunteers, and mentors,” adds Carter. “They all give a lot of time to make it successful.”
